35 Isaiah 29:16,24 Contrary Clay

JMD Devotional 35 Isaiah 29:16,24 Contrary Clay

[Oh, your perversity!] You turn things upside down!
Shall the potter be considered of no more account than
the clay? Shall the thing that is made say of its
maker, He did not make me; or the thing that is formed
say of him who formed it, He has no understanding? ...
Those who err in spirit will come to understanding,
and those who murmur [discontentedly] will accept
instruction.

We are that perverse clay. In the light of our total
depravity, we can't even WANT healing without God
stepping in and giving us the desire and initiating
that change in us.

Dear God,
How I have erred in spirit and continue to. Woe to
hidden secrets, dark motives, perversity. I
desperately need You to continue to instill the 'want
to' change and the desire for healing and wholeness.
Help me to accept instruction, to come to understand,
to have a humble and teachable spirit. I praise and
worship You, who is singularly Holy, and willing to
impart that holy influence into my life.
Amen

34 Psalm 141:5 Godly Criticism

JMD Devotional 34 Psalm 141:5 Godly Criticism

Let the righteous man smite and correct me--it is a kindness. Oil so choice let not my head refuse or discourage; for even in their evils or calamities shall my prayer continue.

Are we committed enough to the truth to accept correction without trying to justify ourselves or make excuses for our behavior?

Ecclesiastes 7:5 It is better to heed a wise man’s rebuke than to listen to the song of fools.

There is certainly a kind of test here-of valuing righteousness over one’s pride, of being strong enough to admit one’s failures and to receive correction.

Dear God,
Thank you for being faithful to tell me what I need to hear; whether it pleases my ears or not. Help me to be receptive and to respond well to correction, and to value those in my life who have the courage to confront my errors.
Amen

33 Psalm 166:12 What Can I Do?

JMD Devotional 33 Psalm 166:12 What Can I Do?

What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me? [How can I repay Him for all His bountiful dealings?]

Might I suggest this list of ‘gifts’:
A cheerful countenance
A winsome spirit
To cooperate with His plan of redemption, to take the ‘cup of salvation’
To walk in the truth
To give our life focus, adoration, love and commitment.

3 John 4 I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my [spiritual] children are living their lives in the Truth.

Dear God,
Why am I so reluctant to give you what you want from a perfect heart? Your ‘demands’ are ultimately for my benefit and the best things for me; but I am still functioning as a spoiled child. Please forgive me, and implant the wisdom and faith for me to not withhold a positive and holy attitude from You. May my countenance reflect your radiant goodness, and may it be a witness without reserve.
Amen

32 Romans 7:19,20 I am not 'Sin'

JMD Devotional 32 Romans 7:19, 20 I am not ‘Sin’

For I fail to practice the good deeds I desire to do, but the evil deeds that I do not desire to do are what I am [ever] doing. Now if I do what I do not desire to do, it is no longer I doing it [it is not myself that acts], but the sin [principle] which dwells within me fixed and operating in my soul].

Sin, like a ‘splinter in my finger’, is that ‘no good thing’ in me; but it is not ‘me’, it is not my identity, it is an invader and a traitor. I am not just a ‘sinner saved by grace’, in the eyes of God I am a Saint in Christ Jesus. I am a Saint who sometimes sins, but when I sin, it is not my (new) nature, because I soon think better of it and repent. Neil Anderson has built a ministry on this passage. Sin does not define me. My definition is found in being a Child of God.

Dear God,
Help me to think clearly, to stand firmly and to fight like a true man of God. Empower me to deny the World, the Flesh and the Devil control over my life. May I abide in You, wearing your armor, wielding the sword of truth. Destroy the works of Satan in and through and around my life for your kingdom’s glory.
Amen

31 Galatians 6:7 Ultimate Fairness

JMD Devotional 31 Galatians 6:7 Ultimate Fairness

Do not be deceived and deluded and misled; God will not allow Himself to be sneered at (scorned, disdained, or mocked by mere pretensions or professions, or by His precepts being set aside.) [He inevitably deludes himself who attempts to delude God.] For whatever a man sows, that and that only is what he will reap.

This can be a curse or a blessing---it depends on us! Live deliberately; seize the day and make it count.

Dear God,
With the faithful You will show yourself faithful, to the pure You will show yourself pure, and to the willful You will show yourself willful. Your way is perfect! Oh-give me a heart inclined to agree with You. May your holy influence transform my character so that I might receive your blessings and not curses. Holy and just is the Lord, therefore He will teach sinners in the Way.

30 Isaiah 30 Chastisement, Repentance and Recovery

JMD Devotional 30 Isaiah 30 Chastisement, Repentance and Recovery

Vs 15 For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: In returning [to Me] and resting [in Me] you shall be saved; in quietness and in [trusting] confidence shall be your strength. But you would not…
Vs 20 And though the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide Himself any more, but your eyes will constantly behold your Teacher.

Psalm 119:75 I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are right and righteous, and that in faithfulness You have afflicted me.

Oh the pain that I have brought upon myself by rebelling against God! I justly deserved to be wiped out many times over; but God in His mercy used the consequences of my sins to train me, and the heat of trials to burn off useless dross. I am the recipient of outrageous grace!

Dear God,
I am ashamed at my own waywardness and stubborn rebellion; but I praise your mercy and faithfulness, which has in no way been ‘permissiveness.’ You have corrected me in love; life’s difficulties have trained me. Please cultivate in me a faithful heart and a teachable spirit that I might readily heed your word.

29 Psalm 37:23,24 Attentive Father

JMD Devotional 29 Psalm 37:23, 24 Attentive Father

The steps of a [good] man are directed and established by the Lord when He delights in his way [and He busies Himself with his every step]. Though he falls, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord grasps his hand in support and upholds him.

Some children misbehave in an effort to get attention from otherwise distracted parents. Not so with our Heavenly Father. He delights in our growth, even in our stumbling steps of righteousness; He looks for us to succeed. Yes, He gives us the stern discipline when it is called for-but His anger lasts for only a moment. Do you want His attention? Set your heart on doing and only doing what is right. He won’t take His eyes off of you!

Dear God,
Some of us have a hard time with ‘father’, because our earthly dads couldn’t measure up to You. We need your love, parenting, nurturing and affirmation to grow up like Jesus. Cleanse this word (father) of the hurt, abandonment and pain it brings to mind. Draw us to the warmth of your hearth.

28 Isaiah 29:13 Mechanical Worship

JMD Devotional 28 Isaiah 29:13 Mechanical Worship

And the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near Me with their mouth and honor Me with their lips but remove their hearts and minds far from Me, and their fear and reverence for Me are a commandment of men that is learned by repetition [without any thought as to the meaning],

Mechanical religion does not appease God any more than a mechanical marriage would please a spouse. He wants your heart; to captivate your thoughts and passion, your utmost attention and devotion.

Dear God,
Forgive this creature of habit! May my walk, meditations and worship be genuine and thoughtful, may my utmost attention be focused on you. Draw my soul to seek and find full satisfaction in vital relationship with You, my Creator, my Life, my Lord and my God.

27 Leviticus 19:26 Separated

JMD Devotional 27 Leviticus 19:26 Separated

And you shall be holy to Me; for I the Lord am Holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine.

Why does it seem that God's 'consecrated' people keep striving to be indistinguishable from the world's general population? There may be some merit to efforts aimed at inclusion in an evangelical spirit, but that taken too far would result in dilution, pollution and in 'loosing one's salt.' Our religion is not about a list of prohibitions, it is about a divine relationship. But not doing certain things on matters of principle elevates the status and worth of what we do perform. Like limiting sexual expression within the bounds of marriage infinitely increases its significance and sets us apart from 'the world.'

Dear God,
You are Holy. Holiness is what I need, it is what I long for. The pure in heart will see you; I fall so short. May your holy influence transform my life and instill your holy thumbprint upon my soul.

26 Isaiah 61:1 Freedom

JMD Devotional 26 Isaiah 61:1 Freedom

THE SPIRIT of the Lord God is upon me, because the
Lord has anointed and qualified me to preach the
Gospel of good tidings to the meek, the poor, and
afflicted; He has sent me to bind up and heal the
brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the [physical
and spiritual] captives and the opening of the prison
and of the eyes to those who are bound...

Pride and shame would have us attempt to 'fix
ourselves', off line and out of the sight of others,
but that is the path to legalism. The path to
wholeness begins with the open acknowledgement that
you are broken and need help. The process requires
transparency and accountability with counselors,
mentors and family and friends; you have to come into
the light to rid yourself of darkness. Jesus came to
set the captives free. Trust Him.

Dear Lord,
As I contemplate the residual emptiness and hollowness
of my soul, and my wounded heart I ask for your
healing. Heal all of the broken places within me and
unite my mind, will and emotions in Christ Jesus.
Release me from all bondage and captivity so I may
freely love and be loved. Crown me with the joy of
your presence.

25 Matthew 18:10,11 'Insignificant' People?

JMD Devotional 25 Matthew 18:10,11 'Insignificant' People?

Beware that you do not despise or feel scornful toward or think little of one of these little ones, for I tell you that in Heaven their angels look upon the face of my Father who is in Heaven. For the Son of Man came to save [from the penalty of death] that which was lost.

Acts 10:28B But God has shown and taught me by words that I should not call any human being common or unhallowed...

When I took Latin our class motto was, "Rise above the Vulgar Crowd," which reflected the perception that education put one upon a plateau, and that 'common people' were 'vulgar.' God clearly does not agree with this.

Dear God,
Forgive me for using worldly standards for judging whether a given type of person is worth getting to know; oh how I've disregarded souls that are precious to You! Retrain my mind to look for the inherent worth in every person; and give me spiritual eyes and a compassionate heart that follows your lead in reaching out to the lost and unloved.

24 Psalm 136:23 Impression

JMD Devotional 24 Psalm 136:23 Impression

To Him who [earnestly] remembered us in our low estate and imprinted us [on His heart], for His mercy and loving kindness endure forever;

While other translations are adequate, I choose the Amplified Bible because it brings out the richness of the Hebrew and Greek languages. Which says more, “I remembered you,” or “You are imprinted on my heart?” The original languages contain beautiful word pictures.

Dear God,
How little I knew in the early years of your passionate love for my soul! Knowing that you desire relationship has made all the difference in my walk. I am never alone, there is no “God-forsaken place,” You are always with me. Help me to love You back with all that I am.

23 2 Corinthians 11:29 Empathy

JMD Devotional 23 2 Corinthians 11:29 Empathy

Who is weak, and I do not feel his weakness? Who is made to stumble and fail and have his faith hurt, and I am not on fire with sorrow and indignation?

Are we humble, empathetic and connected enough to others in the body of Christ to share their struggles? If we are not close enough to know their struggles then we are not close enough!

The Church is an organism, which implies a common life. The blood, nervous system and defenses are all shared for the mutual good and well being. It takes commitment and sacrifice to share in another’s suffering. It takes humility to quit looking down on other Christians as if they were not a part of the body because they don’t meet our expectations and standards. We don’t fully know the specific function and purpose of each part, only that God put this body together as He saw fit. Rejoice at being included, and at the inclusion of every other member!

Dear God,
Forgive me for being judgmental; please remove any critical spirit. Help me to love my fellow believers unconditionally, to be nurturing and uplifting. May I be as concerned and committed concerning their welfare as I would be about my own right eye. Make us one as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one; to your praise and glory.

You shall not hate your brother in your heart; but you shall surely rebuke your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him.

21 2 Corinthians 11:20 Personality-Based Ministry

JMD Devotional 21 2 Corinthians 11:20 Personality-Based Ministry

You endure it if a man makes slaves of you, or devours your money and preys upon you, or deceives you and takes advantage of you...(but you are not supporting the man who brought you the Gospel!)

Why will people neglect their local ministers and support TV preachers, most of which are self-promoting? They tend to be boastful; and striving to foster a dependence on themselves and their TV ministry and not on cultivating maturity in the recipient and their dependence upon Christ. These personalities have 'itching ears', they say things that appeal to carnal, immature Christians. God never gave us the right to vote with our tithe; it is meant to support your local Church!

Dear God,
May I not take for granted my local ministers and their weekly toil and sacrifice to meet my spiritual needs. May I be looking for ways to bless them and serve them in practical ways. Thank You for raising up good shepherds after Christ. Please show the false, the pretenders and the frauds for what they are. Give the Body discernment; inspire our leaders; and may Your Kingdom be blessed.

Vs 27 And there will be goats' milk enough for your food, for the food of your household, and for the maintenance of your maids.

Imagine the fear in the heart of the farmer who runs out of food for his livestock in the middle of winter! When he has done all that he can, and has exhausted what he cultivated, tender grass sprouts and herbs emerge to satisfy the need. From seemingly feeble sources God provides for our daily need, enough for ourselves and our households, but we are required to do our part. The tender love and discipline of God are so elegantly displayed in this passage: meditate on this!

Implied Disciplines:
Careful management of one’s affairs.
Diligent preparation, setting aside resources for ‘Winter’ (famine, drought, unemployment, disaster, etc.)
Maintaining a rational outlook on life. (Don’t over-spiritualize!)
Resourcefulness; waste not; be flexible, versatile.
Be diligent, do the right things at the proper times; be self-disciplined.

Dear God,
Thank You for your tender care and ample provision! Please spur and nudge me to do my part at the appropriate times. Help me to manage my household well as a witness and testimony to display godly principles at work. May all of your people prosper and rejoice in your Lordship!
Amen

19 Proverbs 27:20 Hell and Damnation

JMD Devotional 19 Proverbs 27:20 Hell and Damnation

Sheol (the place of the dead) and Abaddon (the place of destruction) are never satisfied; so [the lust of] the eyes of man is never satisfied.

Life is full of tests, and reality doesn't grade on a curve. God is not mocked; we will reap what we sow, to our benefit or destruction. Like a moth drawn to the flame, my latent impulses gravitate towards harmful media. Recovery involves cultivating an appetite for positive things and grieving those desires that lead one down the road of perdition. It's called 'starving the bad dog and feeding the good one.' Be certain of this-the one you feed will grow to dominate your life.

Dear God,
Just when I feel like I'm making progress, the 'old man' rears his ugly head. I confess unholy appetites and wayward impulses. I need your holy influence in my life. Please forgive my inordinate affections. Renew my heart and mind; help me to feel the same way You do about sin. May I learn to hate evil and to love, fear and revere You the most.
Amen

18 Isaiah 26:13 Other Masters

JMD Devotional 18 Isaiah 26:13 Other Masters

Oh Lord, our God, other masters besides you have ruled over us, but we will acknowledge and mention Your name only.

It is to my shame to recount what I have allowed to control my life in the past.
Knowing the unparalleled superiority of God's mastery over my life compared to the other things my depravity let master and rule over me should provoke adoration for God and distain for any 'rival master.'

Dear God,

How foolish I am to acknowledge any 'rival master', as if You could have a 'rival!'
I deserve to be treated like a runaway slave; but I ask for mercy and forgiveness.
Consider my spiritual poverty and draw me to yourself, to live cooperatively under your rule and lordship. Help me dethrone any 'rivals' in my life so you may reign as Lord alone.
Amen

17 Proverbs 30:5,6 Trustworthy Words

JMD Devotional 17 Proverbs 30:5,6 Trustworthy Words

Every word of God is tried and purified; He is a shield to those who trust and take refuge in Him. Add not to His words, lest He reprove you, and you be found a liar.

So many things look and sound good until put to the test. Cheep, ‘Big Lots’ tools Vs Craftsman-contractor-grade tools that a construction worker uses every day. Or the pop management theory of the season Vs tried and tested, sound principles and practices. There is no better testimony of quality than to be well-worn through daily use but still be serviceable.

Dear God,
Your Word is so precious to me because it is one of the few things I can truly rely upon. The uncertainty and falsehood of this world inclines me to fear; but please help me to park my trust, hope and confidence on You and You alone. Keep me back from the folly and presumption of thinking I can add to your Word. Help me apply your principles properly.
Amen

16 Matthew 15:4 Audience of One

JMD Devotional 16 Matthew 15:4 Audience of One

“Let them alone and disregard them; they are blind guides and teachers. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a ditch.”

I often have to resist my people-pleasing impulses, my need for affirmation because it makes me ‘perform’ for the wrong audience. I am to seek God’s approval and disregard the people of status that tempt me. I have an audience of one, even God.

Dear God,
Forgive me for letting the world’s standards dominate my life, for caring so much about what people think about me. Help me to see the emptiness and futility of performing for mere men. You never miss a performance, You always give the right cue at the appropriate time because You wrote the script and You direct all things. May I excel for your pleasure, to please your eyes.

15 Daniel 4 Definition of Sanity

JMD Devotional 15 Definition of Sanity Daniel 4

Though God warned King Nebuchadnezzar (through Daniel the Prophet) that he was about to be cut down due to his pride, the King didn’t listen. Heeding the counsel of his own mind, he took credit for everything good in his life, so God took away his sanity for 7 years.

Vs 34 And at the end of the days [seven years], I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding and the right use of my mind returned to me; and I blessed the Most High [God]…

Going through the experience of loosing my own mind for a season gave me this definition:
‘Sanity is agreeing with God’s Word about who we are and the world around us.’

God is the ultimate reality. Disagreeing with Him is insanity. Jesus is the eternal truth.

Dear God,

Help me to think rightly about the things pertaining to life and godliness. By Your Holy Spirit give me power, love and a sound mind, with the self-discipline to live out the truth you’ve given me. May my witness reflect ‘The Mind of Christ.’

14 John 15:4 God's Embrace

JMD Devotional 14 John 15:4 God’s Embrace

Dwell in Me, and I will dwell in you. [Live in Me, and I will live in you.] Just as no branch can bear fruit of itself without abiding in (being vitally united to) the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in Me.

A year’s meditation on discipleship has yielded this personal mission statement:
‘Entering into an all-consuming relationship with Christ and His Church and drawing others into this communion.’

Dear God,

I affirm that You are the source of my life, joy and hope. Your strength carries me through; Your Holy Spirit leads me into all truth. Help me to consistently remain vitally united to You. Make people jealous of our fellowship that they may be drawn into it as well. Amen

13 Psalm 118 Merciful Chastisement

JMD Devotional 13 Psalm 118 Merciful Chastisement

Vs 5 Out of my distress I called upon the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free and in a large place. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
Vs 7 The Lord is on my side and takes my part, He is among those who help me…
Vs 18 The Lord has chastened me sorely, but He has not given me over to death. Open to me the [temple] gates of righteousness; I will enter through them, and I will confess and praise the Lord.
Vs 22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is from the Lord and is His doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

Dear God,
May I not resent the processes you put me through for my own good. May I embrace your discipline and oversight of my life. Please continue to work out the change, growth and maturity I need through instruction, chastisement and whatever hardships you deem necessary. Please give me the grace to cooperate, to respond with excellence to your redemptive work.

12 Ephesians 3:17 Going the Distance

JMD Devotional 12: Ephesians 3:17,18a Going the Distance

May Christ through your faith [actually] dwell (settle down, abide, make His permanent home) in your hearts! May you be rooted deep in love and founded securely on love, that you may have the power and be strong to apprehend…

There are many ‘starters’, convinced of coming judgment, compelled to ‘flee from the wrath to come.’ But no one makes it across life’s deserts on their own steam. When God offers to bond with us in intimate relationship, it is not ‘an extra’; it is ‘an essential.’ We will not finish the race without genuine dependence on His presence and power visibly demonstrated in our lives. We can’t maintain obedience to a distant and austere distortion of God. The power to be transformed comes by embracing through faith God’s passion for your soul and His earnest desire to be with you through each trial. The only way for a mortal to really know and love The Immortal is to go through hardships together and come out on the other side renewed by communion.

Dear God,
I don’t want sentimental hog-wash to obscure reality; I don’t want to be up on stage acting if no one’s watching. If what I’m praying for does not resonate with your heart, design and desire please change both it and me! I want to know the God who made Himself known to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses and Elijah. You’ve got my attention but I know my limitations; the road ahead is long and hard and lonely. Help me to sense our fellowship; reveal your love for me-how deep, how wide, how far and how high! (Secret love is a scandal!) Make it clear to me so my mind can be at ease and I can know for certain that I need no other person, plan or power other than what I already have in You. May my soul satisfy you and bring you pleasure.
Amen

11 2 Chronicles 26 Half-Hearted Devotion

JMD Devotional 11 2 Chronicles 26 Half-hearted Devotion

Summary of King Uzziah of Judah’s reign.
Vs 4 He did right in the Lord’s sight, to the extent of all that his father Amaziah had done. (His father “did right in the Lord’s sight, but not with a perfect heart. 2 Chronicles 25) {So much for using your parents, peers or any other men for a standard.}
>He did OK when Zechariah the Prophet was in town, who instructed him. He prospered under that mentoring.
>King Uzziah was cleaver, he loved farming, was a great warrior, he enlisted skillful men to invent catapults to shoot arrows and great stones.
Vs 15b And his fame spread far, for he was marvelously helped till he was strong.
Vs 16 But when [King Uzziah] was strong, he became proud to his destruction; and he trespassed against the Lord his God, for he went into the Temple of the Lord to burn incense on the Altar of Incense. (A duty for consecrated priests alone.)
>The priests tried to stop him and point out his sin, which enraged the King. God struck him with instant leprosy.
>He was cast out and isolated till his death.

Dear Lord,
May I never forget that I have been marvelously helped. May pride not ruin me nor separate us. Help me to be consistent with and without mentors and accountability. Incline me to seek you with a perfect heart. Amen.

10 Isaiah 33:5,6 Mutual Treasure

JMD Devotional 10 Isaiah 33:5,6 Mutual Treasure

The Lord is exalted, for He dwells on high; He will fill Zion with justice and righteousness (moral and spiritual rectitude in every area and relation). And there shall be stability in your times, an abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the reverent fear and worship of the Lord is your treasure and His.

For a relationship to be sustained, there must be something present both parties desire. If we understood what God offers of Himself in the intimacy of worship it would be our utmost passion also. God inhabits our praise.

Dear God,

Please give me the good sense to fear, revere and to love You with a perfect heart; and to give You sincere worship. Help me to value what you value, and to distain what You regard as rubbish. May praise and adoration well up from within my soul as You cultivate the character of Jesus Christ in my life. Amen

9 Proverbs 28:13 Clean Slate

JMD Devotional 9 Proverbs 28:13 Clean Slate

He who covers his transgressions will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes his sins will obtain mercy.

Psalm 32:3, 5 When I kept silence [before I confessed], my bones wasted away through my groaning all the day long. I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord [continually unfolding the past till all is told]--then You [instantly] forgave me the guilt and iniquity of my sin. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

Dear Lord,

Please help me to keep the slate of my heart and life clean and free of unconfessed sin. May your Holy Spirit convict me where I need to repent, and may I be able to distinguish unholy accusations and attacks of the Evil One masquerading as ‘conviction.’ May nothing hinder my fellowship with you and your Church. Summary
*Remember who delivered you, where your blessings come from, the destruction of God’s enemies and our Covenant. (*Bullets from the context of the chapter.)

Vs 4 Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is One [the only Lord]. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] your heart and with your entire being and with all your might.

Did He leave anything out? We are called to an all-consuming love affair with our Creator.

Dear God,

Worthy are you of the complete devotion of all I am. 7 Integrity Proverbs 28:6

JMD Devotional 7 Integrity Proverbs 28:6

Better is the poor man who walks in his integrity than he who willfully goes in double and wrong ways, though he is rich.

The man of duplicity (double-minded) always has a smokescreen for appearances and another hidden agenda. Passwords, alias’s, secrets- all elements of darkness and deceit. The earliest name for the followers of Christ was “The Way’ (of Christ, implied.) May I walk in the way of Christ, in the open, in the light, in the truth.

Dear God,

Please drive from my heart and life any lingering duplicity, any lust for ‘Egypt’, any dark and sinful motive. Help me to learn, live and walk in Your Way, the high and noble road of Christ Jesus. Amen

6 Psalm 25: Great Personal Prayer

JMD Devotional 6 Psalm 25: Great Personal Prayer

Vs 1 “Unto You, O Lord, Do I bring my life…”
2- let me not be put to shame or disappointed
4- show me your ways, teach me your paths
5- guide me in your truth and faithfulness
6- remember your loving kindness and mercy
7- remember NOT my sins, lapses and frailties
8- good and upright is the Lord, therefore He will instruct sinners in the way
9- He leads the humble in what is right, and the humble He teaches His way
18- Behold my affliction and my pain and forgive all my sins.

Dear Lord,

Forgive me when I thrash about, overwhelmed by life and troubles,
When I question your motives and inherent goodness!
I’m like a dog biting the veterinarian’s hand who’s working to heal it.
See past my foolish ways and remember the good you desire to do in and through this life.
Restore my sense of well-being, my equilibrium, my heart and my attitude.
Help me to understand what You are teaching me.

5 No Shortcuts Matthew 19:16, 17b

JMD Devotional 5 No Shortcuts Matthew 19:16, 17b

And behold, there came a man up to Him, saying, Teacher, what excellent and perfectly and essentially good deed [singular] must I do to possess eternal life?...
If you would enter into the Life, you must continually keep the commandments.

Men want a token deed or one-time great feat to purchase their place in Heaven-but Heaven is not for frauds! Citizenship invokes a continuously good state of being that only comes by abiding in Christ.

Dear God,

Please help me to stop searching for shortcuts to spiritual maturity. Thank you for your high standards and your commitment to quality. The old life and the futile ways of satisfying your lust has to die! Galatians 2:20 Posted by Picasa

4 Humble Bearing Galatians 6:2, 5

JMD Devotional 4 Humble Bearing Galatians 6:2, 5

Bear (endure, carry) one another's burdens and troublesome moral faults, and in this way fulfill and observe perfectly the law of Christ (the Messiah) and complete what is lacking [in your obedience to it]. For every person will have to bear (be equal to understanding and calmly receive) his own [little] load [of oppressive faults].

I hate to admit that my natural reaction is to despise weaknesses in others that I’m trying to hide in myself. The distribution of imperfections should keep us humble and non-judgmental, but our perception is very subjective.

Dear God,

Why do I go on thinking my outer pretensions fool you and others (even myself)? Of what do I have to be so proud? I confess the ruse to protect my ego. It bends my mind and stretches my faith that you saw exactly the kind of person I am and yet you loved me and pursued me to bring me to yourself. My foolishness and utter depravity did not deter you. You are awesomely good to feeble flesh! You have put goodness and holiness within my frame by making your home in my heart. All I can say is THANK YOU! Help me to be patient and gentle with other struggling souls. Amen

3 Virtual Sustenance Isaiah 29:8, 10

JMD Devotional 3 Virtual Sustenance Isaiah 29:8, 10

It shall be as when a hungry man dreams that he is eating, but he wakens with his craving not satisfied; or as when a thirsty man dreams that he is drinking, but he wakens and is faint, and his thirst is not quenched. So shall the multitude of all the nations be that fight against Mount Zion.
For the Lord has poured out on you the spirit of deep sleep. And He has closed your eyes, the prophets; and your heads, the seers, He has covered and muffled.

It was directed against a people who went through the motions of religion, but not from the heart. They wanted to feel good more than to be good; yearning for appearance more than substance, so God gave them anesthetic. ‘Spirituality’ not based on truth is treason! What a dreadful curse! May it never apply to me! May I never settle for so little.

Dear God,

Please forgive my iniquity and deliver me from vain attempts to feed my soul on substitutes for You! Jesus offered Himself as meat indeed and drink indeed; draw me into Holy Communion with you. You alone are the source of abundant life. May your people not be deceived or satisfied with illusions and falsehood; make our union with You authentic. You are my sustenance. Help me to keep it real. Amen

2 Galatians 3: 26,27 In Christ

JMD Devotional 2 Galatians 3: 26,27 In Christ

For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith. For as many [of you] as were baptized into Christ [into a spiritual union and communion with Christ, the Anointed One, the Messiah] have put on (clothed yourselves with) Christ.

‘Doing’ doesn’t make us right with God, but ‘being’ in Christ by faith does. There is one bus permitted into Heaven, and Jesus is driving it. We either get on board through faith or we remain under God’s wrath.

Dear God,

Jesus is my way, my truth and my life.
Please help me to abide in Him and draw my guidance,
understanding and vitality from communion with you.
Keep me from legalism, self-righteous works, from sinful self-reliance.
My new life began in and by your Holy Spirit,
And it continues in your divine presence in me.
To God be the glory.
Amen

1 Evil Counsel 2 Chronicles 22:3,4

JMD Daily Devotional 1 2 Chronicles 22:3,4 Evil Counsel

(Speaking of Ahaziah) "He also walked in the ways of
the House of Ahab, for his mother was his counselor to
do wickedly. So he did evil in the sight of the Lord
like the House of Ahab, for they were his counselors
after his father's death, to his destruction."

We know from Proverbs 11:14, "Where no counsel is, the
people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there
is safety." If you have an evil counselor, cut them
off! Get them out of your life. Poor association
corrupts good morals. Seek and be a positive
influence.

Dear God,

May it never be said of me that I have been a
dispenser of evil counsel!
Please make such sources of corruption obvious so your
people can steer clear of their destructive influence.
Help me to find safety in the midst of good, wise and
godly counsel.
May only good advice proceed from my lips.

Amen.
