61 Deuteronomy 32:32,33 Song of Moses Part 4

JMD Devotional 61 Deuteronomy 32:32,33 Song of Moses Part 4

For their vine comes from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of [poisonous] gall, their clusters are bitter. Their wine is the [furious] venom of serpents, and the pitiless poison of vipers.

Sodom literally means ‘burning’ and that can refer to fire or to lust, just as it does today. Gomorrah means ‘accumulation’.

Ezekiel 16:49 Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, overabundance of food, prosperous ease, and idleness were hers and her daughters'; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

What is the root of the vine of Sodom but ingratitude and discontent? Geographically located in what Genesis describes as the richest, most fertile land; this blessing only made them lust for more. Instead of rejoicing in what God gave them, they misused and abused the blessings and each other in unbridled, burning lust. Mankind has always had a choice between Jerusalem, representing Peace with God, contentment and wholeness; and Sodom (burning lust, godless self-willed indulgence.) Given enough rope we will hang ourselves!

Dear God,
May your people not be deceived by ‘pleasant’ poisons; may we shun the wine of Sodom’s vine. Fulfillment and wholeness are from your hand alone. Help us to live by faith in your unfailing goodness; to be fully committed to your will and your way of living.
Amen
