JMD Devotional 181 Amos 5:10,6:12 Unregenerate Attitudes

5:10 They hate him who reproves in the [city] gate [holding him as an abomination and rejecting his rebuke], and they abhor him who speaks uprightly.

6:12 Do horses run upon rocks? Do men plow the ocean with oxen? But you have turned justice into [the poison of] gall and the fruit of righteousness into [the bitterness of] wormwood--

In my mid twenties, when my wife and I were raising a family, I despised Dr. James Dobson and his ‘Focus on the Family’ organization just as a matter of personal taste. I thought I was above it all. Years later, when it was more than apparent that I had gotten most of parenting wrong, I developed a grudging respect for him and the principles he espoused. I hear the same sort of negative attitude from my kids when it comes to Dr. Phil, and the deja vu makes me shudder. Today I know it is arrogance and sin that shut my ears to good counsel, that provoked me to mock people and ministries rather than consider their content. Regardless of celebrity, each person at the very least merits respect as a being made in the image of God; and every person has a story, some bit of wisdom, something meant to contribute to the human race. When we find ourselves mocking Oprah, Martha Stewart and others we need to stop and take a moral inventory. If we have an attitude compatible with ‘Bevis and Butt-Head’, we need to repent.

Dear God,
Please forgive me for blocking your truth sometimes with my arrogant attitudes. I need your discernment for sure, for no earthly person is consistently right; but I do believe that You have distributed knowledge, and we should listen to the meek and lowly as well as the high and mighty, prayerfully considering what each person says on its own merit. Purge out the mocking and unregenerate attitudes when they crop up; please give me a winsome heart and countenance.
Thank You for there being just one truth, regardless of who carries each piece of it.
Amen
