JMD Devotional 176 Psalm 52:1-5 Boasting of Utter Depravity?
WHY BOAST you of mischief done against the loving-kindness of God [and the godly], O mighty [sinful] man, day after day? Your tongue devises wickedness; it is like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. You love evil more than good, and lying rather than to speak righteousness, justice, and right. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]! You love all destroying and devouring words, O deceitful tongue. God will likewise break you down and destroy you forever; He will lay hold of you and pluck you out of your tent and uproot you from the land of the living. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!
I have observed mostly (young) men boasting of things in bars or in the locker room that in any other context would be an admonition of guilt. Conquests, vulgarity, gluttony...who are they trying to impress? Worldly people tend to encourage this kind of banter. But if they only had a sober moment to review what they said and who they hurt; they might find the healthy shame to realize that their sin is chiefly against the God who created them to be holy and righteous, faithful to their spouse, a good citizen, a moral and decent person. The big picture is that God has abundantly blessed each of us with the health we have, our abilities, national greatness and natural resources, our earnings, and a legacy of truth and saints who have gone before us (and sacrificed greatly for our well-being). So would we respond to God's grace with mischief and expect to avoid just retribution?
Dear God,
It gives me pause to realize that 'every idle word' that I have spoken will be reviewed before You in Heaven's court one day. I confess ample evidence to convict me for saying inappropriate and hateful things. I have also failed to encourage people who needed to hear something good. Please help me to not spew words out carelessly; but to think soberly, and to respect the fragile spirit of others, and to fear You and turn away from evil so that I have nothing to fear at Judgment day. May Your Holy Spirit make up for my personal deficiencies and transform my heart and mind and character.
Amen
