Recovery Devotional 269 Nowhere Man

JMD Devotional 269 James 1:8, 4:8 Nowhere Man

James 1:8 (AMP) [For being as he is] a man of two minds (hesitating, dubious, irresolute), [he is] unstable and unreliable and uncertain about everything [he thinks, feels, decides].

James 4:8 (AMP) Come close to God and He will come close to you. [Recognize that you are] sinners, get your soiled hands clean; [realize that you have been disloyal] wavering individuals with divided interests, and purify your hearts [of your spiritual adultery].

I have a mental list of the top ten verses that I do not like; my flesh hates them because it would rather shift the blame for my bad behavior on anything but myself. The spotlight of truth is exceedingly uncomfortable, it makes me sweat. For years I was angry at God for my own self-destructive ways; it is hard to take ownership of my own sin. I imagined Him as standing over me and pounding me for every mistake, when in fact my own sin was self-correcting.

Numbers 32:23 (NIV) "But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the LORD; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.”

Jeremiah 2:19 (NIV) Your wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Consider then and realize how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the LORD your God

and have no awe of me," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.

Dear God,

I am sorry for not liking the medicine of Your Word sometimes; sin is cancer and I need chemo. Help me to keep those verses that make me the most uncomfortable (in my flesh) the closest to my heart; the source and site of my infection. Renew a right spirit within me, and help me to love Your Law and the righteous way that leads to life in Christ.

Amen

Recovery Devotional 268 The Ultimate Choice

JMD Devotional 268 Colossians 3:1-3 The Ultimate Choice

IF THEN you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, thus sharing His resurrection from the dead], aim at and seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. And set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth. For [as far as this world is concerned] you have died, and your [new, real] life is hidden with Christ in God.

When I went through a particularly dark passage in my life, where for months I struggled with suicidal impulses, loneliness and depression, God broke through in a remarkable way. I was dreaming, and right before I woke up, I heard the reference (not the verse) “Colossians 3:3”; I was startled awake, and you can believe I got up right away and looked it up. It was a divine prescription for my condition. All of the things that upset me, that I saw slipping away; my financial security, my reputation, my ministry, all of the trimmings of my life really did not matter to a dead man. I was still hanging on to so much ballast: dead weight, dead works, the past, and my clinging and striving only made me miserable. To die to self is freedom. Jesus called His disciples to follow Him to the Golgotha, to carry their cross, the instrument of their execution, the symbol of Christian sacrifice. Born again implies death to the old life. Sin has no power over a dead man; a person who has truly died to this world cannot be manipulated, bribed or seduced by things. God requires us to place such a high premium on eternal spiritual life that the temporal physical trimmings should pale in significance. It is all going to burn. Faith changes our paradigm: we are seated with Christ in the presence of Almighty God; therefore, we can be objective about material and physical loss. Sin, the flesh and the Devil are defeated when we elect to sacrifice this retched life for true spiritual life; when God becomes our all-in-all. Having this mind-set is a daily choice and spiritual discipline that transforms our attitude and perception. The irony is that clinging to what passes for ‘life’ in this world actually sucks the life right out of you; giving it up for Jesus Christ ushers in abundant life (He said it better: Matthew 10:39 (NIV) “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”)

Dear God,

You are the Great Physician, Your way is the way of life everlasting. Please help me to quit going back to futile ways of living, of trying to distil vitality out of rubbish. May I daily recognize that true life comes only from You; and anything else posing as life-giving is false. I am in the presence of God; what more do I need? Faith is the victory that overcomes the world; to God be the glory.

Amen

Recovery Devotional 267 Called to What?

JMD Devotional 267 Colossians 2:6 Called to What?

As you have therefore received Christ, [even] Jesus the Lord, [so] walk (regulate your lives and conduct yourselves) in union with and conformity to Him.

I grew up in fairly unsophisticated institutional churches that seemed to place all of their emphasis on recruitment and in building an earthly kingdom. All of the hell-fire and damnation preaching was geared to get someone to walk down the aisle to get ‘saved’. But in my experience, they did not know what to do with people once they became ‘saints’, filling the pews with spiritual infants. Any man who could keep his nose clean was elevated to deacon. People were roped into teaching Sunday school and serving on committees without a lot of regard to their gifts and abilities. What resulted was a very adolescent, dysfunctional organization, an institution driven more by human manipulation than by the Spirit of God. My words are harsh; but the impression endures. The Church should focus on discipleship and spiritual maturity, not on a one-time event or on but on a lifetime walk that is increasingly getting in step with Jesus. It is the difference between spiritual stagnation (dead works) and life. It is about abiding in Him and He in us; and we in each other in blessed union: living, growing , breathing God in. Jesus did not call us to park on a philosophical platform or to parrot a doctrine; He called us to walk and live with Him (be yoked together).

Dear God,

There is something wrong when so-called ‘spiritual life’ leaves me lonely and bored…I suspect that that kind of ‘life’ has nothing to do with You. It is Your presence, purpose and plan that imparts meaning to everything that would otherwise be mundane. Impart Your Holiness into my life: abide in me and draw this person into union with You and the Church. Cultivate maturity in Your people: raise up coaches, teachers and leaders to help us apprehend the fullness of Christ in our lives; for Your glory.

Amen

Recovery Devotional 266 Comparing Myself to Others

JMD Devotional 266 2 Corinthians 10:12 Comparing Myself to Others

There was an evening get together the other day; a little social at someone’s home to discuss our church’s vision and outreach. When I got home from the event, I wondered why that little bit of activity left me feeling so worn out. Something else was going on in the background that was taxing my resources. As I went to bed, God brought this scripture to mind:

2 Corinthians 10:12 (NIV) We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.

Being around other people wears me out because I am unconsciously and continually making comparisons. I get really uncomfortable in these social situations. I am so over-sensitive that I won’t make a good impression; and afraid that I will not measure up to my peers. It is somewhat pathetic that I feel I have to say, do or purport to be something impressive just to be accepted. Why can’t I just relax and be myself? Am I afraid of being exposed as ‘average’? Can I let others lead and give my support without trying to modify what they are doing? Why are men only comfortable from a position of superiority? When I cannot find that exalted spot, I go to plan B (I tend to try to become totally invisible). My perception always tends to see other people as having better status, jobs, homes and cars; rather than rejoicing at their success a pit forms in my stomach. There is sin in comparing myself to others. It is the antithesis of contentment. It betrays a lack of trust in God’s plan for my life. I strive much too hard to be more than I am; to prove myself to other people. This keeps me from really engaging them and from being a part of what they are doing. Such comparisons only bring isolation and misery. It kills teamwork.

2 Corinthians 10:12, 17,18 (NIV) We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. But, "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord." For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.

[Self-testimonials are nothing but vanity. Proverbs 27:2 (NIV) Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips. Ultimately, the only opinion that matters, and the only one to strive to impress is God.]

Galatians 6:3-6 (NIV) If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, for each one should carry his own load. Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor.

[We are all debtors, I owe much to my pastors, teachers, family, authors and to the Body of Christ at large. If my nose is too large, I cannot see anybody else!]

Comparisons are futile. God went to a lot of trouble to make each one of us unique, in a specific time, place and status. I need to move my focus off of myself and on to my Maker, Master and Friend. This striving has to go! I am an odd duck; but God made me for a purpose, and I need to patiently abide in a trusting relationship with Him as it is revealed and played out on His schedule.

He is sovereign, I don’t need to be in the driver’s seat. I have to be O.K. with sitting on the bench.

Isaiah 40:25-31 (NIV) "To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?" says the Holy One.

Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength,

not one of them is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God"? Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary

and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Dear God,

I try so hard to portray myself as a man who’s ‘got it all together’; but You intimately know my deficits. I am uncomfortable in my own skin. Please help me to accept myself, my short comings, my status and my circumstances. You know how I want to do great things; but discipline, humility, consistency, trust and patience come first. Help me to be more concerned about Your kingdom, Your will, and the needs of other people than myself. The feelings of inferiority that I bear are a distortion: please correct my self-perception: I am not an accident, You did not make a mistake; there is a plan for my life; I am significant because You deliberately sculpted my soul. It is O.K. to be me. May I find rest in our relationship.

Amen

Recovery Devotional 265 Unholy Staff

JMD Devotional 265 Ephesians 6:11,12 Unholy Staff

Put on God's whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil.

For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere.

There is always more at work than meets the eye. Though it seems like we need little provocation, agents exist that distort our perceptions, amplify perceived offenses, breed conflicts and seduce us to self-centeredness and rebellion. Yes, our own flawed psychology can also account for all of these things. Neil Anderson, in “The Bondage Breaker”, asserts that we humans, made in the image of a triune God, are a mini-trinity of spirit, soul and body. There is never a time that all three parts do not play a role in who and what we are. Our perceptions can be distorted by physical illness, emotional baggage and by exterior spiritual influences in any combination. Effective treatment needs to consider our physical, emotional and spiritual needs in order to treat the whole person. The Bible warns of an unholy staff of sinister agents out to destroy your witness and influence in the world; the more we step out from under God’s rules for living the more exposed we are, as if we stepped out from under His umbrella: our rebellion gives the enemy license to oppress us. Obedience to God keeps us under divine protection.

Dear God,

I thank You for medical doctors and psychologists and counselors who help treat the human condition. I also acknowledge that science has its limits; so I come to You in my ignorance of spiritual things; I depend on Your help and protection and guidance where I am so blind. Help me to tune out evil advice and seduction, to quickly say no to temptation, to remain loyal to Your kingdom. Forgive me for the rebel I have been, for consorting with the enemy of my soul, for being so gullible and faithless. May I not consider anything that the Devil may put on the table to entice me; help me to love You supremely.

Amen

Devotional 254 Ephesians 4:21-25 Our Relationship to the Truth

JMD Devotional 254 Ephesians 4:21-25 Our Relationship to the Truth

But you did not so learn Christ! Assuming that you have really heard Him and been taught by Him, as [all] Truth is in Jesus [embodied and personified in Him], strip yourselves of your former nature [put off and discard your old unrenewed self] which characterized your previous manner of life and becomes corrupt through lusts and desires that spring from delusion; and be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude],

and put on the new nature (the regenerate self) created in God's image, [Godlike] in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore, rejecting all falsity and being done now with it, let everyone express the truth with his neighbor, for we are all parts of one body and members one of another.

None of us are as truthful as we think we are, that is, truthful to ourselves and others consciously and subconsciously. To some degree, we are self-deceived and we deceive others. We may fail to answer honestly out of fear of rejection, we may be overly compliant due to our need for affirmation, or shame may cause us to conceal our sins with facades. There was a time when I had a dozen aliases, many secret passwords, and I obsessively scrubbed my computer cache of cookies, because I had something to hide. I was also very self-righteous; and believed I was a cut above everyone else. I led a double life; was impulsive, erratic and unpredictable. I had strayed into darkness and confusion. You will not find the truth within yourself as New Agers assert, because the Truth is in the person of God, Jesus Christ. We cannot reason our way to Him; we must believe that His is the Way, the Truth and the Life, and invite Him into our lives to establish the Rule of Truth. A commitment to the truth acknowledges that sin is inferior to righteousness. Our actions affect everyone around us. The more truthful we are the more consistent, reliable and stable we become. You can always count on the truth. Your relationship to the truth defines your character or lack there of. Never minimize the importance of being true. Godliness cannot exist without this. Mental health correlates directly with our embrace or rejection of the Truth (delusion is the rejection of obvious truth!)

Dear God,

You are the Truth, and Your Word is true from the beginning! Your truth shines the light I need to take my next step; I am ever dependent upon Your illumination. You once had a bright angel; and we all know where His self-illumination sent him; how his pride spoiled his beauty. All that is untrue shall be cast from Your presence: so make me into a man of truth. May righteousness and goodness adorn my soul due to Your extensive work in my life. Do this for Your glory. And help me to gently speak the truth in love to my neighbor as Your Ambassador of Truth.

Amen
